Should voting in the United States be mandatory?

In many countries, it has become mandatory to vote in every election, as this is an required for a nation to be a true democracy. However, while the United States has always encouraged voters to participate, our government has never imposed a law requiring each citizen to vote.

I am writing in response to an editorial in the latest Waltonian entitled, "Occupy Wall Street: For goodness' sake, why?"
